The Magical World of Giuseppe Mascarello
In 1881, Giuseppe Mascarello (a vineyard worker then) bought a piece of land in the village of Monforte d’Alba. It was a part of the Barolo DOCG in Piedmonte. This is where the story of the Giuseppe Mascarello winery begins.
Today, the family vineyard is owned and run by Mauro Mascarello, the fourth generation to oversee the great winery.
The Mascarello family is famous for their skilled winemaking and exotic Barolo wines made from the Nebbiolo grape variety. The Barolos from the Monprivato vineyard are among Italy's most renowned single vineyard wines.
And, the Mascarello cellars are located in Monchiero.
The Mascarello Family History
In 1904, Giuseppe’s son, Maurizio Mascarello, bought a portion of the great Monprivato vineyard. This vineyard has been around since the 1600s, and in it Maurizio planted Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, and Barbera vines.
15 years later, Maurizio Mascarello planted a clone of the Nebbiolo Michet grape that would one day be revived by his son Giuseppe to create the estate’s legendary Ca d'Morissio wine.
Maurizio’s son Giuseppe took over the winery or Domaine in 1923 after his father passed away. Giuseppe was the one who replaced the old casks with the Slavonian casks that the wine is matured in today.
His son, Mauro Mascarello worked alongside Giuseppe for many years before taking over the winery entirely. Mauro Mascarello returned the winery to the traditional long fermentation and winemaking methods.
These days Mauro Mascarello works alongside his son, a wine technician, and his wife, Maria Teresa (who looks after the winery’s books.)

The Giuseppe Mascarello Vineyards
Most of Giuseppe Mascarello vineyards are in the Barolo wine region and cover over 15 hectares of land.
1. Monprivato vineyard
The great Monprivato vineyard is situated in the village of Castiglione Falletto. The vineyard has an excellent terroir with south-western exposure and soil made up of calcareous silty deposits and limestone. The Monprivato cru vineyard is exclusively planted with Nebbiolo vines.
2. Bricco Vineyard
Like the Monprivato cru, this vineyard is in Castiglione Falletto. The vineyard has been with the Mascarello family since 1987. It is planted with the Nebbiolo and Dolcetto grape varieties.
3. Codana Vineyard
The Codana vineyard is at the tail-end of the Monprivato vineyard and is planted with Barbera and Nebbiolo.
4. Toetto Vineyard
This vineyard is blessed with an excellent terroir and is planted with the Freisa vine. It faces west-northwest and its soil consists of brow clay and grey marl.
5. Villero Vineyard
The Villero vineyard is just over half a hectare, with a wonderful terroir with south-western exposure. Its soils are made up of clay and sand. It is planted exclusively with Nebbiolo vines.
6. S. Stefano di Perno Vineyard
This vineyard sits in Perno, a village in Monforte d’Alba. It has been owned by the Mascarello family since the late 1970s. The terroir is excellent, with west-southwest exposure, and the soil consists of marl, clay, and sand. The different vines in the vineyard include Barbera, Dolcetto, and Nebbiolo.
7. Scudetto del S. Stefano di Perno Vineyard
The Scudetto del S. Stefano di Perno Vineyard in Monforte d’Alba has Barbera and Dolcetto vines, both planted in 1998.

The Mascarello family produces wines in four broad styles - Barolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, and Langhe.
1. Barolo Wine
The winery produces four Barolo wines that are highly sought after by wine lovers all over the world.
- Barolo DOCG Riserva Monprivato Ca’ d’Morissio: This Nebbiolo wine is complex and elegant, made from the Michet clone first planted by Murizio Mascarello in 1921. After undergoing floating cap fermentation for about a month, the wine is aged in a Slavonian oak vat for a little over three years.
It can be cellared for over two decades.
- Barolo DOCG Monprivato: This Barolo wine is produced like the Riserva, with the only difference being that it is matured for under three years.

4. Langhe Wine
There are two Langhe Nebbiolo wines, created from the Nebbiolo and the Freisa grape varieties. The wine is bottled two years after the vintage and can last for up to six years.
- Langhe DOC Freisa Toetto: This Langhe Nebbiolo is dry and is fermented for 15 to 20 days.
- Langhe DOC Nebbiolo: This Langhe Nebbiolo is fermented, and then matured in Slavonian oak barrels (known as botti.)
