Puligny Montrachet: Vineyards, Terroir, And Vinification
Home to four Grand Cru vineyards and 17 Premier Cru sites, Puligny Montrachet is a commune in the Cote de Beaune sub-region of Burgundy. It’s situated across the Bâtard Montrachet commune and has Chassagne-Montrachet to its immediate south and Meursault to its north.
This appellation boasts high-quality Chardonnay grape plantings thanks to its exceptional combination of soil structure, topography, and climate.
It also grows Pinot Noir vines in small quantities, producing stunning red wine.
The soil in Puligny Montrachet is primarily Burgundian containing high levels of limestone, especially on its slopes. These slopes contribute greatly to the healthy growth of the vines by reducing the risks of the high water table.
As for the climate, the commune has warm, dry summers and cool, long winters — perfect for growing high-quality grapes.
Once the grapes are ripe, they’re handpicked, pressed slowly, and decanted for 24 hours.
The wine then undergoes alcoholic fermentation in oak casks (25% new oak) before aging in tanks for six months.
