Veuve Clicquot Rose is an irresistible pink-hued wine (pink Champagne) made by the iconic Veuve Clicquot Champagne house.

It stays true to the Veuve Clicquot style and was the first pink Champagne ever made by mixing still red wine with sparkling wine

Veuve Clicquot Rose Champagne has a robust Pinot Noir base which gives it complexity, strength, and elegance. It also has smaller percentages of Chardonnay and Meunier grape varietals in the blend.

Veuve Clicquot has different non-vintage and vintage Rose styles:

  • Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin La Grande Dame Brut Vintage Rose
  • Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Vintage Brut Rose Champagne
  • Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Brut Rose Champagne
  • Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Cave Privee Collection Brut Vintage Rose
  • Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Rich Rose

Before we get into the details, let’s explore a bit about the illustrious Champagne House.

The Iconic Veuve Clicquot Champagne House

The Veuve Clicquot Champagne house was founded by Philippe Clicquot under the name “Clicquot” in 1772 in Reims, France.

In 1798, his son, François Clicquot, joined him at the head of the Champagne house. But, after his sudden death, his 27-year-old widow, Barbe Ponsardin, took over the business.

She called the Champagne house “Veuve Clicquot” (meaning “The Widow Clicquot”) and turned it into one of the most incredible wineries in the world.

Madame Clicquot pioneered many Champagne practices that winemakers still use today:

  • 1810: She introduced the first vintage wine in Champagne. Before this, only non-vintage wines were produced.
  • 1816: Madame Clicquot pioneered the riddling table (a device that separates the sediment from the wine in the bottle). Today, it’s the foundation of the Champagne production method.
  • 1818: Madame Clicquot was the first to create Rosé Champagne made with white and red wines. She did this by adding Pinot Noir still wine to the classic Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Brut Champagne.

Today, luxury brand Louis Vuitton Möet Hennessy (LVMH) owns Veuve Clicquot.

Now let’s see how Veuve Clicquot makes these beloved pink Champagnes.

How Is Veuve Clicquot Rose Made?

Before Madame Clicquot reinvented Pink Champagne, other Champagne makers like Ruinart made rose sparkling wine by mixing in a little elderberry juice to give it a pink hue.

Before Madame Clicquot reinvented Pink Champagne, other Champagne makers like Ruinart made rose sparkling wine by mixing in a little elderberry juice to give it a pink hue.

But, here’s how the Veuve Clicquot cellar master makes this pink Champagne:

  • This Champagne is made by blending about 12% excellent quality red wines like Bouzy (made from Pinot Noir grapes from the Champagne region) with the traditional Champagne blend. The three different red wine cuvees are produced from red grapes sourced from Vaudayants, Grande Cure, and Clos Colin vineyards.
  • All three batches of berries for the Veuve Clicquot Rose Champagne go through pre-fermentation in stainless steel tanks for about two days.
  • Next is alcoholic fermentation, where the berries are crushed to extract color, tannin, and fruitiness.
  • After fermentation, the red wine is aged in a barrel.
  • Meanwhile, the grapes for the sparkling wine undergo pressing and fermentation.
  • After this, the wine goes through secondary fermentation. At this stage, the released carbon dioxide creates the wine’s distinct effervescence.
  • The red blend is added to the finished sparkling wine.

Veuve Clicquot Rose stays true to the consistency of the house style and has great texture, smooth tannins, and plenty of character.

Let’s pop the cork and explore the styles of Veuve Clicquot Rose wines.
