It is a lovely wine that shows the slightly gamy side of young Bonnes-Mares on these red soils, as it offers up notes of black cherries, quince, a bit of roasted venison, blood orange, minerals and vinesmoke. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and powerfully built, with broad shoulders, excellent mid-palate depth, and a long, ripely tannic and chewy finish.

Medium red. Knockout nose combines pungent raspberry, peony and minerals. Enters the mouth silky, then explodes on the back half with raspberry, minerals, black pepper and spices. Classic chewy Bonnes-Mares with outstanding clarity of flavor, powerful tannic spine and impressive length. This is tough going today but should be superb in about ten years-and, like the Amoureuses, it may eventually merit an even higher rating. (ST) 93+

Pungent incense, and herbal concentrates; ginger and cinnamon; kirsch and framboise distillates, along with their dark flesh-and-juice fresh counterparts, all practically assault the nose from Roumier's 2006 Bonnes Mares. This saturates the palate with sweet ripeness and liqueur-like textural richness, while cherry pit, black pepper, and peat offer counterpoint. A savory carnal undertone adds another intriguing dimension. The concentration and resonance of spices, herbs and fruit in the finish is superb. Here is a Bonnes Mares much more complex and dynamic at this youthful stage than the majority. In fact, I can't see that it would be a crime to drink some young, although it should age well for at least a dozen years. (DS)

A touch of a vegetal element to the sweet cherry and woodsy spice flavors and a sinewy texture mark this red. It seems closed down now, with the structure dominating, but there's a smoldering intensity and energy that powers the long aftertaste. Offers both elegance and depth. Be patient. (BS, Web—2009)

There is a discreet but not invisible note of herbal tea to the aromas of blue berry, violet, tea, anise, clove, earth and a hint of underbrush. There is fine punch to the rich, full-bodied and still quite serious flavors that are supported by good levels of dry extract on the impressively long finish. This is not an especially big wine by the usual standards of the Roumier Bonnes Mares but I like the refinement and lovely sense of harmony. With that said, it would be fair to say that this is still in the process of shedding its moderately firm tannic spine and for my taste, I would suggest allowing it another 6 to 10 years of cellar time.
