The 2014 Ruchottes Chambertin Grand Cru takes time to unfurl in the glass, eventually opening out with dark berry fruit, a touch of briary and blueberry, and a suggestion of sea spray. It is paradoxically intense but subtle. The palate is medium-bodied and here, it just shows the wood a little more than say, the Clos de la Roche. There is good density here, but it is the acidity that drives this forward and imparts so much tension. This is a Ruchottes that rivets you to the spot. (NM)

(20 new oak): Dark red. Alluring scents of black raspberry, violet, spices and licorice. Juicy and penetrating, with perfectly integrated acidity framing and extending the flavors of boysenberry, coffee and bitter chocolate. This bracing wine finishes with substantial dusty tannins and noteworthy grip and class.

An interesting note of wild strawberries adds interest to the more typical aromas of raspberry, spice, earth and distinct floral nuances. The superbly intense, powerful, focused and wonderfully chiseled mineral-driven flavors deliver a palate staining, austere and brooding but seamlessly well-balanced finish where a hint of wood appears. This is at once refined and restrained though it's quite clear that this will, as is usually the case, require moderately extended cellaring.

A core of cherry and strawberry flavors lurks beneath the floral and vegetal notes in this racy red. The oak is beautifully integrated, and this is layered through the long, spice-tinged aftertaste. Best from 2022 through 2040.

The 2014 Clos des Ruchottes was aged in twenty percent new oak this year and the wine absolutely shines in its expression of terroir as a result, yet this wine has some of the most beautiful young fruit tones I have ever tasted in a red Burgundy out of cask! The stunningly pure and sappy nose jumps from the glass in a blaze of red plums, cherries, cocoa powder, a very complex base of dark soil tones, gamebird, a hint of cedar and a pungent topnote of violets. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very pure, with a marvelously reserved personality that is absolutely bursting at the seams with sappy fruit! The finish is very, very long, focused and suavely tannic, with stunning soil signature and boatloads of energy. Domaine Rousseau’s greatest young vintage of Clos des Ruchottes? (Drink between 2025-2075)
