James Suckling
There's appealing freshness with plenty of tannins to get stuck into. This has a dark spicy edge that's almost tarry, with assertive red cherry and red plum flavors. Drink now.
Vinous
Brilliant ruby. Aromas of fresh dark berries, spicecake, licorice and potpourri gain vivacity from a mineral element. Stains the palate with energetic blackberry and bitter cherry flavors that become deeper and sweeter with air. Rich yet quite lithe, showing no excess fat. The floral and spice qualities come back strong on the gently tannic, penetrating finish, which hangs on with outstanding tenacity.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
One of the wines of the vintage will no doubt be the 2014 Châteauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac. This single vineyard, 100 Grenache release reveals a deep purple color as well as rich, full-bodied notes of mulled blackberries, exotic spice, licorice and Provençal garrigue. Possessing ripe tannin, a full, layered middle and a great finish, it will age for 10-15 years. While I always preferred the Barbe Rac in the past, the quality of the Croix de Bois cuvee continues to soar and at this point, I think the two cuvees are neck and neck in terms of quality.
