Critics Scores
Wine Spectator
Solidly built, with a racy iron note that frames the core of red currant, damson plum and cherry fruit nicely, letting light tobacco, pepper and sanguine details flitter through the background. Shows some latent grip, so cellar a touch. Best from 2019 through 2025.
Vinous
The 2015 Granite Syrah was matured for 18 months in 25 new oak. It has a perfumed bouquet of bilberry and mulberry fruit; white pepper and touches of clove develop with aeration. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannin, slight earthiness on the entry and truffle and black pepper toward the lightly spiced finish. This is very classy, perhaps just leaning to the powerful side of Swartland Syrah.
James Suckling
Lots of black plums, dark cherry compote, baking spices, vanilla and resin. Full body and tons of rich dark fruit, but it's so well supported by a stream of fresh acidity and a firm tannin backbone. A long finish. Drink in 2020.
Wine Enthusiast
Attractive scents of brambly berry and red plum set the stage on the nose of this bright, spicy wine. A pleasant herbaceous, stalky note coupled with a peppery lift lend depth and complexity, while final flavors of church incense, cola spice and tilled soil unfold on the finish. The satiny mouthfeel offers plush tannins and an earthy, mineral texture that provides good grip to the close. Drink now–2026.
