Pol Roger has long been a pillar of the Champagne community. It’s one of the few remaining family-owned grand marques, a title bestowed on only the most highly regarded Champagne producers. The flagship cuvée was made for the UK’s Champagne-loving prime minister, who once said of the bubbly beverage, “in victory I deserve it, and in defeat I need it!". The 2015 Pol Roger Winston Churchill contains 60% pinot noir and 40% chardonnay. Even in youth, this brut vintage demonstrates a generous body with fragrances of apples, orange zest, brioche, chalk, and delicate mousse. Critics have compared it to the concentrated 1985 and 2012 vintages. Expect this refined Champagne to only gain complexity and depth over the next two decades. The 2015 Brut Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill shows off the savoury side of the vintage to great effect. Hints of dried pear, sage, mint, dried flowers, lemon oil and chamomile open gradually in this mid-weight, lithe edition of Pol Roger’s tête de cuvée. The 2015 unfolds nicely with time in the glass, but I wouldn’t think of opening a bottle anytime soon. Readers will find a nervy Winston Churchill marked by notable freshness and vigour more than size. This is a fine effort in a vintage that has proven far trickier than most observers envisioned.
