In recent years, the Clos des Ruchottes has been giving the Clos St-Jacques a run for its money, and while that isn’t the case in 2016, it’s still a lovely wine. Aromas of peony, wild berries and a touch of dried mushroom precede a full-bodied, complete wine with a juicy core of sweet fruit. It has tense, stony tannins, and a lovely purity and elegance. Drinking Window 2026 - 2050. (WK)

Firm reduction flattens the fruit today but there is a lovely sense of verve and freshness to the intensely mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors that possess first-rate delineation on the sleek, youthfully austere and sneaky long finish. This is really quite classy and has already developed impressive depth. While this clearly has the intrinsic stuffing to reward extended cellaring, 5-ish years or so should be sufficient in order to enjoy this beauty.

(30 new oak): Good medium red. Pure, restrained aromas and flavors of black cherry, licorice and minerals. Silky and fine-grained on entry, then juicy and tighter in the middle, showing strong calcaire energy as the mother rock here isn't much more than a foot below the surface. This rich, firmly tannic wine boasts a long, rising finish featuring black fruits and violet. Impeccably balanced from the start, but this youthfully austere wine will need time in the cellar. The estate is slowly replanting this vineyard, so this 2016 is a mix of old and young vines.(ST)

The 2016 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru, which Cyrille described as her “heart wine,” has a superb bouquet with ebullient dark cherries, bergamot, blackberry and briary, wonderful delineation and demonstrating more exuberance than Mugneret-Gibourg (which as affected by frost, whereas Rousseau was not). The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, shimmering red fruit, outstanding mineralité and a subtle crescendo toward the pixilated finish. Is this the finest Ruchottes-Chambertin in 2016? Without a shadow of a doubt.(NM)

Alluring, saturated flavors of pure cherry, currant and wild strawberry are at the core of this juicy red. As this evolves on the palate, licorice and spice notes emerge and vibrant acidity kicks in. Beautifully balanced, showing terrific energy and a long aftertaste of fruit, spice and mineral. Best from 2024 through 2045.
