The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru les Fremiets, reduced to seven barrels this year (40 one- or two-year-old oak), offers attractive, pure, raspberry and crushed strawberry scents on the nose, floral scents (rose petals) sneaking out from under the coves with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, lithe tannin. I adore the harmony and precision of this Fremiets, not a powerful or flamboyant Volnay, but just Pinot Noir shimmering on the tongue. This comes highly recommended for those that appreciate classic Volnay.

This is also quite aromatically restrained with its admirably pure blend of floral, red currant, spice and soft wood nuances. There is a notably finer mouth feel to the medium-bodied flavors that are silky and seductive where the texture contrasts with the powerful and punchy finish that also flashes impressive depth and length. This is quite firm yet it's not so backward that it couldn't be enjoyed relatively young.

The most recognisably Volnay-like of all the domaine’s wines, according to Jean-Pierre Charlot, this comes from an old vine parcel on the Pommard side of the village. It’s a gentle, lacy, refreshing style with floral top notes and refined raspberry and wild strawberry fruit flavours. The oak is perfectly judged. 2021-28.
