Why We're Buying
Valdicava lives and breathes sangiovese. In fact, it is the only grape that this Montosoli estate uses. Under the guidance of winemaker and owner Vincenzo Abbruzzese, Valdicava focuses on two expressions - Rosso di Montalcino and Brunello di Montalcino. And, during the most exceptional vintages, wine lovers are treated to Valdicava "Madonna del Piano" Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. This intense, balanced, and captivating red wine utilizes the oldest vines on the property. Planted in 1970, the sangiovese yields a potpourri of black cherries, raspberries, lilacs, herbs, iron, and a hint of smoke. Moreover, it has a muscular and tannic structure that should cellar well for two decades. In his review, wine critic Eric Guido called it, “The 2016 is one of the most balanced, yet also prettiest, expressions that I have ever witnessed from Valdicava’s Madonna del Piano.” The Final Sip: With glowing reviews from critics, it’s easy to see why 2016 "Madonna del Piano" Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is the pride and joy of Valdicava.
Critics Scores
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The Valdicava 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano impresses for its intensity, its balance and its freshness. The wine is medium to full-bodied with a good amount of fruit weight and power that is offset by acidity and the lifted, vibrant quality of the bouquet. If balance is the objective, this wine meets it goals, although like with many of its peers, you certainly won't miss the deep inner power of this determined Brunello. (ML)
