John Gilman
The number of barrels for the Grands Echézeaux from Monsieur Collardot is the same as the Clos St. Denis and the wine also sees two new casks out of three. However, at the time of my visit, this was carrying its slightly higher percentage of new oak a bit more seamlessly than the Clos St. Denis and was really singing. The nose delivers a fine constellation of red plums, cherries, Vosne spices, cocoa powder, an excellent and complex base of soil, venison, woodsmoke and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and beautifully sappy at the core, with excellent soil signature, ripe, fine-grained tannins and a long, complex and vibrant finish. Fine, fine juice. 2028-2070.

There are three barrels of the 2017 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru, two of them new. It has a very well-defined bouquet of blackberry, briar, raspberry and estuarine scents (think of cold marshland on a winter day.) The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, beautifully integrated 100 whole bunch fruit, and fresh and very poised toward the persistent vintage. A superb Grands Echézeaux, and a seriously fine follow-up to the excellent 2016.
