Why We're Buying

“One of the finest wines in the Jadot portfolio.” That was the praise bestowed on 2017 Domaine Louis Jadot Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru by wine critic William Kelley. Considering the pinot noir’s heap of ratings in the mid-90s, it’s hard to argue. Hailing from 90-years-old vines, 2017 Domaine Louis Jadot Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru marries power with finesse. It unleashes aromas of dark berries, spice, and wood while rich concentration contributes to the dense mouthfeel. While this pinot noir has a firm, athletic structure, it remains light on its feet. Silky tannins glide into an impressively long finish that should only improve with time in the cellar.

There’s a wild and exotic edge to the nose with red and violet flowers, blood oranges, pomegranate and an array of fine, bright red fruit, as well as a dusting of hard, brown spices and wild-forest notes. The palate is succulent, very juicy and intense and has an athletic tannin structure with powerful, long tannins that hold the finish well. Very old vines, planted in the 1920s. Try from 2024.

Once again there is a hint of forest floor to the fresh and intensely spicy, floral, wild dark berry aromas that are trimmed in moderate wood influence. There is fine richness and excellent power to the focused, caressing and energetic flavors that deliver an impressively long finish that is shaped by very firm but fine tannins. This will also need plenty of time to arrive at its apogee.

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

One of the finest wines in the Jadot portfolio, the 2017 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) unfurls in the glass with aromas of sweet red berries, menthol, dark chocolate, blood orange and grilled meats. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with superb depth and dimension, succulent acids and notable concentration, its tannins entirely cloaked in fruit. While this is a comparatively supple, giving rendition of this cuvée, it will nevertheless demand patience.

VINOUS

The 2017 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has quite an intense bouquet of mainly red but some black fruit, the oak neatly enmeshed and hints of black truffle and tobacco emerging with aeration. This feels very composed. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity and good structure. There is a firm grip to this Clos-de-Bèze and it sports one of the most energetic finishes. Great potential.

This wine is all about power and dense tannins. It also has surprising charm from the open black fruits. Although it will age, this wine is also likely to be ready to drink after 10 years.
