The 2018 Monthélie 'les Duresses' from Domaine des Comtes Lafon is a really lovely bottle in the making this year. The bouquet is ripe, pure and vibrant, wafting from the glass in a mix of red and black cherries, dark soil tones, bitter chocolate, gamebird, woodsmoke and a deft touch of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is fullish, pure and nicely transparent down to its soil elements, with a good core of fruit, moderate backend tannins and a long, complex and very shapely finish. Fine juice that will start to drink beautifully with only a bit of bottle age, but also has the balance to age quite gracefully. 2025-2055.

A ripe, fresh and attractively spicy nose reflects a variety of both red and dark pinot fruit nuances. The nicely voluminous and textured middle weight flavors possess a lovely sense of verve before terminating in a mildly rustic, indeed even robust, finish. I suspect that this will round into shape relatively quickly.

Unusually for Dominique Lafon, he used some whole clusters on this crunchy, floral Pinot Noir from Monthélie's best-known, south-facing site. Bright and refreshing, with stylish 20 new wood, raspberry and red cherry fruit and a racy, well-balanced finish. Always a well-priced introduction to the domaine's impressive lineup of reds.
