John Gilman
At least at the present time, there is more mineral drive here in the Champeaux than in the Goulots of 2018. The bouquet is deep and classy, wafting from the glass in a mix of red and black cherries, plums, dark chocolate, grilled meats, woodsmoke, vanillin oak and a fine base of dark soil tones. On the palate the wine is sappy, full-bodied and more defined by its underlying soil than the Goulots, with a good core, fine-grained tannins and a long, plush and nicely complex finish. This is a good example of its terroir, as well as the vintage.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Aromas of cassis, plums, dark chocolate and sweet soil tones, complemented by a subtle top note of warm spices, introduce the 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux, a medium to full-bodied wine that's muscular and structured, with broader shoulders than the Cherbaudes that preceded it in our tasting, revealing excellent concentration and a long and ripely tannic finish.

A riper nose is composed by notes of poached plum and a port-like nose yet the aromas are quite fresh. There is excellent volume and mid-palate density to the caressing middle weight flavors that also exude evident minerality on the focused, powerful and pit-fruit inflected finish. This is sufficiently firm that it will need at least 6 to 8 years before it is approachable.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux 1er Cru is very floral and perfumed on the nose, so much so that if served blind I might guess it came from Vosne-Romanée. The lightly spiced palate is well balanced, with ripe black cherry and wild strawberry fruit and a touch of blood orange toward a finish of moderate length. This just needs to shake off its conservatism.
