The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combe Aux Moines has turned out nicely, mingling aromas of plums, rose petals, potpourri, spices and loamy soil in a rich mélange. Medium to full-bodied, lively and fleshy, with an elegantly muscular underpinning of powdery tannin, it will merit a bit of patience. (WK) 93+
Decanter
Jean-Marie Fourrier is almost single-handedly responsible for creating the fame of this isolated Premier Cru. Planted in 1926 (though not by monks, alas), this parcel really comes into its own in hotter vintages, retaining freshness, poise and a degree of sang-froid. Racy, crunchy and refreshing, it has red cherry and pomegranate flavours, a hint of water melon sweetness and considerable underlying power and ageing potential. (TA)

Here too there is excellent volume to the attractively textured middle weight flavors that exhibit focused power on the mouthcoating, serious and very firmly structured finale. This is built-to-age and a wine that is going to need it.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Combe Aux Moines 1er Cru has one of the finest aromatics from Fourrier, offering mineral-soaked black and red fruit armed with laser-like focus. The clean, precise palate is very well balanced with fine tannins and a superb line of acidity. The disarmingly silky finish shows a surfeit of freshness. Superb! (NM)
