The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru, which was the first vineyard to be picked, has retained the precocious bouquet of blueberry and cassis, and strong violet scents emerge with time; you might describe this as "punchy." The palate is fleshy and generous, although it does not comes close to the precision and terroir expression exhibited by the 2019, which already has its nose in front. Drinking window: 2023 - 2038

The Gouges have a total of 1.08ha of what many consider to be a Grand Cru in all but name and always make one of the best expressions of the terroir. This is quite forward for a Les-St-Georges, with ripe, spicy, bramble and mulberry flavours, scented oak, some aromatic spices and a backbone of grippy tannins. At the more alcoholic end of the spectrum.

This too flirts with volatile acidity on the cooler though still liqueur-like aromas both red and dark pinot fruit that is laced with hints of violet, anise and earth. The velvety, round and overtly powerful medium weight plus flavors also possess good power and punch on the lightly stony and slightly warm finale. This is not quite so over-the-top like the Vaucrains though it is still impressively robust.
