The restrained nose only grudgingly offers up its liqueur-like aromas of plum, dark raspberry and cassis along with timid floral, earth and spice notes. I very much like the sense of tension and vibrancy of the saline, muscular and powerful middle weight plus flavors where the supporting tannins are firm more refined than usual on the velvet-textured finale.

A touch more introverted than the exuberant Chaignots and Bousselots, the 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Roncieres unwinds in the glass with notes of blackberries, cassis, sweet soil tones and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, rich and structured, this is a serious, muscular Nuits, with tannin and concentration to burn, but it's very promising. (WK)

The 2018 Nuit Saint-Georges Les Roncieres 1er Cru comes from a one-hectare parcel of around 60-year-old vines. It has a clean, precise bouquet of blackberry, briar, crushed rocks and light marine scents (oyster shell and crustacean), understated and quite reserved for this domaine. The medium-bodied palate offers sappy black fruit, displaying more sapidity than Les Bousselottes and fanning out gently toward the finish. This feels quite approachable in style thanks to its silky finish. Touches of hoisin and truffle emerge on the aftertaste. Excellent.
