Vinous
The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Champ Canet 1er Cru comes from red clayey soils around 40cm in depth over limestone soils. The vines are around 65 years old, and they suffer more millerandage than other Premier Crus. This has an intense, concentrated bouquet with touches of white flower infusing the crushed rock/flinty aromas. It feels stoic but very well defined. The palate is well balanced, offering orange peel and marmalade notes on the entry. Wonderful depth here, and a sense of energy. This should evolve into a marvelous Champ Canet once in bottle. (NM)
Burghound
A beautifully layered assortment exhibits notes of plenty of floral influence on the white peach, lemon rind, pear and discreet spice wisps. There is fine richness to the vibrant and highly seductive middle weight plus flavors that brim with dry extract that serves to buffer the moderately firm acid spine shaping the attractively long finish. Sauzet has an excellent track record with this wine and 2018 should only serve to enhance it.
Decanter
Champ Canet isn't as famous as some of the other Puligny Premiers Crus, but it can produce spectacular wines, especially in warmer vintages when it's higher elevation is a real boon. Fermented in 30 new wood, it's full-flavoured, yet very refined, with notes of white flowers, creme fraiche, citrus peel and wet stones. Drinking Window 2021 - 2028. (TA)
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
One of the highlights of the range is the 2018 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Canet, a lovely wine that wafts from the glass with aromas of ripe citrus, buttered orchard fruit, praline and wet stones. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and textural, it's lively and complete, with fine tension at the core and a long finish. (WK)
