Napa Valley doesn't have a first growth classification like Bordeaux. But if it did, Harlan Estate would be a no-brainer for the distinction. The flagship cabernet sauvignon has been a mainstay among California's cult cabs, notching 14 perfect scores from critics since its debut in 1990. The 2018 vintage is Harlan Estate in peak form. The inky garnet wine swirls with perfumed notes of blueberry compote, crème de cassis, black cherries, graphite, iron, wildflowers, and baking spices. The medium to full body reveals thundering layers of powerful yet balanced fruit with refined tannins and a mineral-driven tension. While this Bordeaux-style red blend has tantalizing drinkability in youth, it would be criminal to open it anytime soon. The Final Sip: A bottle of 2018 Harlan Estate ensures exclusive access to "the ultimate cult winery."
Critics Scores
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2018 Harlan Estate was tasted as a barrel sample, to be bottled in March. Deep garnet-purple in color, it needs a fair bit of swirling to reveal a wonderfully fragrant perfume of blueberry pie, chocolate-covered cherries, mulberries and black currant pastilles with hints of cumin seed, rose oil and black olives. Medium to full-bodied, the taut, grainy-textured palate delivers remarkable energy with compelling tension and a long, graceful, earth-laced finish.
