Majestic. Awe-inspiring. Superb. No matter how you describe 2019 Domaine Joseph Drouhin Corton-Charlemagne, the bottom line is the same – it's one of the finest white wines in Burgundy. In the words of wine critic William Kelley, "of all the region's important houses, Drouhin's style places the greatest premium on aromatic range and structural finesse." This energetic gem opens with an orchard's worth of fruity aromas. Crisp green apples, orange rinds, pomelos, and white flowers make for a charming and approachable chardonnay that has more than enough structure to last a decade-plus in the cellar. The only problem? The year's harvest was smaller than usual. As a result, Joseph Drouhin produced half the usual amount.
Critics Scores
Burghound.com
A much more restrained nose reluctantly offers up its array of exceptionally floral-infused aromas that include those of acacia, lilac and rose petal along with hints of Granny Smith apples and lemongrass. There is outstanding volume and power to the relatively refined larger-scaled flavors that are much, much more mineral-driven on the youthfully austere, serious and compact finish. This beauty will need at least a few years of keeping first and should amply reward 10 to 12.
Decanter
The east-facing climat of Les Languettes supplies all the fruit for this domaine white from Joseph Drouhin, so this is not an over powerful Corton-Charlemagne. Instead, it's built around a core of freshness and minerality with coiled, underlying concentration and stylish, scented 30 new wood. Racy and refined with some (skin) tannic grip.

Vinous
The 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru comes from east-facing vineyards within the Les Languettes, a small production of six barrels. It has a closed and stubbornly backward bouquet that is outflanked by the Clos des Mouches Blanc. The tensile palate delivers good acidity and notes of orange zest and light peach notes, quite pure, and a spicy stem ginger and salty peanut finish. Very fine.
