Produced with fruit purchased from two parcels on the Chassagne side, one exposed fully to the south and the second a bit east, neighbours with Lafon and DRC respectively. The result resembles these wines, with fruit on the exotic end of the spectrum enlivened by citrus and mineral notes. On the palate the texture is dense and rich, but easily balanced by firm acidity that sustains it through an immensely long finish. Drinking Window 2024 - 2039.

Opening in the glass with dramatic aromas of pear, white flowers, clear honey and toasted bread, the 2019 Montrachet Grand Cru is full-bodied, rich and enveloping, with lively balancing acids and a deep and complete profile, concluding with a long, lavish finish. It's produced from must purchased from Baron Thénard—whose large holdings lie on the Chassagne side.

This is also aromatically restrained and requires considerable swirling to coax the aromas of layered and cool spicy essence of pear, apple, white peach and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume and mid-palate density to the borderline massive flavors that also possess a highly seductive texture while displaying stunningly good length on the balanced and mouth coating finish. As is often the case with this wine, it will need time to develop better depth, but the track record is so good that it is all but guaranteed to do so.

The 2019 Montrachet Grand Cru has a clean and precise bouquet that I find less concentrated than either the Bienvenue or Bâtard-Montrachet. There is a very slight minty note that might become more pronounced with time in bottle. The palate is more intense than the nose suggests, slightly honeyed in texture, spicier than the Bâtard with a powerful and persistent finish. I would put it on par with Sauzet’s other Grand Crus rather than ahead, at least at the moment.
