Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Aromas of ripe cherries and cassis mingled with notions of licorice, anise, sweet spices, dark chocolate and peonies introduce the 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Très Vieilles Vignes, a full-bodied, layered and concentrated wine that's rich and velvety, with a broad-shouldered, textural profile and a long, resonant finish. Framed by beautifully ripe, powdery tannins, it's an especially sensual rendition of this perennially great wine. Pierre-Jean Roty suggests that his 2019 vintage is defined by "generosity and freshness," comparing the wines to a hypothetical blend of the domaine's 2005 and 2012 vintages, and reports that he began his harvest on September 20. The range has turned out brilliantly, marrying the vintage-typical charm and sensuality with the depth and structure typical at this address to deliver wines that will offer broad and lengthy drinking windows.
