Why We're Buying

No winery makes perfection look ordinary more often than Maison M. Chapoutier. Situated in Tain-l'Hermitage in the Northern Rhône, the estate has notched 40 perfect scores from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, the most of any winery. Le Pavillon alone is responsible for ten of those 100-point ratings. The 2020 incarnation of this syrah has all the makings of a modern classic. It’s chiseled, balanced, and harmonious, with no shortage of aging potential. The granite influence permeates the medium to full body that’s already flush with cassis, raspberries, violets, wildflowers, and earthiness, and a pepper-tinged finish. With hospitable weather contributing to an excellent harvest, 2020 M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon has a shot at immortality. At the bare minimum, investors have a profound example of what Hermitage can be. The Final Sip: Microscopic yields. Legendary winemakers. An immaculate harvest. What more could you ask for from 2020 Le Pavillon?

This has that tell-tale touch of soy to the plum and blackcurrant fruit so reminiscent of this cuvée. Fluid and juicy on the palate, this has great intensity and salinity without feeling heavy or overripe. Plenty of sweet, ripe tannin and balanced acidity. Only medium-bodied, there's a touch of pepperiness on the finish, great freshness, harmony and balance. Sometimes a wine seems a bit too easy, a bit too effortless, and it can lull you into a sense that it lacks seriousness; this wine tries to do that, but I'm not inclined to underestimate it.

Chapoutier's 2020 Ermitage le Pavillon shows a more chiseled, defined structure than the other 2020s, suggesting greater potential longevity. This full-bodied effort is loaded with purple raspberries and cassis, but it remains tight and taut, showing fascinating tension and elegance allied to great depth and length. Impressive!

A ripe, sexy, opulent Hermitage, the 2020 Ermitage Le Méal has lots of black raspberry, violet, spring flower, and cured meat-like aromatics. It shows its Méal origin on the palate, where it’s full-bodied, has a creamy, velvety, opulent mouthfeel, ultra-fine tannins, and one gorgeous finish. It’s certainly the most extroverted in the lineup, but it still brings plenty of focus, freshness, and structure.

Another Hermitage that might top out the scale is the 2020 Ermitage Le Pavillon, which comes from the western side of Hermitage and the Bessards lieu-dit. All destemmed and still aging in 15 new larger barrels, it has classic granite-influenced cassis fruits as well as graphite, liquid violets, scorched earth, and powdered stone. Full-bodied, dense, powerful, and flawlessly balanced, it has perfection written all over it.
