Why We're Buying
Ornellaia belongs in the pantheon of great Italian wines. It’s revered in the same way as first growth Bordeaux and California’s cult cabs, consistently earning critic scores between 95 and 100. The 2020 vintage is no exception. Estate director Axel Heinz called it ‘a classic Ornellaia,’ with slightly less cabernet sauvignon than the previous release. Meanwhile, Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner praised the effort as “a beauty, so generous and opulent with fully seamless transitions.” The red blend offers a sweeping expression of the terroir, balancing notes of fruit and oak in harmony. Moreover, the ripeness and freshness of 2020 Ornellaia capture the fruit at its apex in an earlier-ripening vintage. The Final Sip: Anyone in search of a masterclass in Italian winemaking should not hesitate to grab a bottle or two of 2020 Ornellaia.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Tasted from barrel, the 2020 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia will be presented in the fall but won’t hit the market until spring of the following year. This is a beauty, so generous and opulent with fully seamless transitions. The wine’s traditional blend is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with tiny percentages of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, although this warm vintage makes due with a pinch less of the Cabernet Sauvignon. Fruit is selected across 107 hectares of Ornellaia vines, although the estate recently purchased an additional eight hectares next to Guado al Tasso in Castagneto Carducci, with terraces and vines aged between 15 and 28 years old. This broad and generous expression has a beautiful quality of fruit and oak that speaks to the very best of Italian winemaking. 95-97
