Why We're Buying
Château Beaucastel has been a cornerstone of Rhône winemaking for more than five centuries. In that time, the family-owned winery has mastered the art of blending the 13 approved grape varietals in the appellation. That skill consistently yields balanced, elegant, and dynamic cuvées, and 2021 Château Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin is no exception. The red blend features a kaleidoscopic combination of mourvèdre, grenache, counoise, and syrah. A fruit-forward wine with deep concentration, the 2021 vintage shines with exceptional purity and a perfumed nose. If it’s anything like previous releases, 2021 Hommage à Jacques Perrin should age gracefully for upward of 30 years. The Final Sip: Hommage à Jacques Perrin has collected five perfect scores from critics in the last five years, making it a must-have stash amongst serious wine collectors.
Critics Scores
Vinous
The quality of the 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin is impossible to ignore, almost cruising at the same high altitude as the 2020. Aged in foudre and made from the usual blend of 60% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache and 20% Syrah. The 2021 Hommage à Jacques Perrin displays fragrant violet, blackcurrant, red and black cherry, blueberry, thyme, lavender, licorice and mint aromas. Full-bodied, polished and enveloped in an intricate web of velvety tannins, it concludes with excellent persistence on the complex finish. 95-97
The Wine Independent
The 2021 Hommage a Jacques Perrin is composed of 75% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Grenache, and 5% Counoise. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it pops from the glass with expressive notes of baked black plums, boysenberry preserves, and fruitcake, followed by hints of tar, black pepper, garrigue, and fragrant soil. The full-bodied palate delivers multilayered fruit with impressive grace, featuring fine-grained tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long with a peppery lift.
Jane Anson
One of the original big name French wines on the Place de Bordeaux, now joined by many others but still leading the pack in terms of prestige and quality. Juicy, powerful, seductive, a ton of spice, underbrush, red cherry, bilberry, cumin, toasted oak, incense, powerful liqoruice and cocoa. So much complexity but also so much lightness of touch, just love this wine and its lyricism. Winemaker César Perrin effortlessly handles a vintage that had plenty of challenges.
